MISSION STATEMENT

“The American Culture Association, founded in 1979, is an international organization dedicated to exploring all manifestations of the cultures of the Americas. The Association holds that both popular and elite elements of culture are important to this exploration. In terms of scholarship, the ACA encourages single-focus as well as interdisciplinary studies. By publishing The Journal of American Culture, by sponsoring regional, national, and international conventions, and by offering awards that recognize distinguished contributions to the field, the ACA seeks to support, enhance, and extend American Culture Studies.”

HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

During the evolution of the Popular Culture Movement, scholars in literature and history departments complained that the popular culture movement had left them out. The American Culture Association was founded to include traditional studies of American literature, the arts, and history.
