Historical research in Germany and Belgium. Thesis on German Annexionspolitik in the West during World War II. Ph.D. in 1972. From 1973 to 1979 scientific collaborator of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich; chief of the scientific library and author of exhibitions on Swiss history; editor of the Guidebook of Swiss Museums. 1979 to 1985 creation of a new interdisciplinary museum on food (Alimentarium) in Vevey; opening in 1985; since then director of this museum. From 1985 to 1991 president of the Swiss Museums Association. From 1993 to 1998 president of ICOM's International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM). From 1993 to 1999 president of the Swiss National Committee of ICOM. From 1998 to 2004 member of the Executive Council of ICOM. Since 2004 Vice-President of ICOM. Initiator of the Postgraduate Studies Programme in Museology at Basle University. Lecturer of museology. Author of articles on museology and food history.
