Dr. Campbell received a B.A. from Colorado College 1972 and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in history in 1979, earning summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Gamma Mu, and Phi Kappa Phi honors. She worked at the Newberry Library and Indiana Univerity - Bloomington for 12 years before coming to Austin Peay State University in 1992. Dr. Campbell also taught at USMA (West Point) from 1989-1991. She serves on a half dozen editoral boards including H-Net and Teaching History, A Journal of Methods.
Her publications include a book, Women at War with America: Private Lives in a Patriotic Era (Harvard, 1984) and thirty-six scholarly articles on women's history, social and military history. Dr. Campbell's special interest is women in the military in the 20th century, especially World War II.
