Project consists of an interpretive drama entitled The Will being performed at Idlewild over a long weekend conference in May 2008. The performance will be the catalyst to connect young people of color with the history of the Reconstruction era as interpreted through an African American family’s experiences. It will also inform audiences about the role of arts and culture in shaping the African American post Civil War world. Along with the drama, there will be two panels on the history of African Americans in opera and classical music, and onsite youth panels and workshops. The latter will not be funded with grant funds. The setting of Idlewild for this also informs young people about this African American resort community and piece of Michigan history. It is hoped that this will be the first of many annual classical music youth camps for young people of color.
