The State Historic Preservation Office working with pertinent convention and visitors’ bureaus from New Buffalo to Ludington researched much of the potential exhibit content. The rediscovery of the West Michigan Pike (U.S. 31) came out of this research. Like the Route 66 idea, applicant will use the exhibit to educate citizenry and local officials about the historical and cultural significance of their beach town communities. The exhibit will travel throughout 2009 staying in each location for 6-8 weeks. Local organizations will be encouraged to add artifacts and other materials to strengthen the tie with their particular community. Michigan Historical Center staff will lead community conversation on the exhibit. |
