The English Department at SVSU is seeking funding for an open house to celebrate the 100th birthday of Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Theodore Roethke in November of 2008. The event will offer a tour of Roethke haunts; a lecture by poet and Professor William Heyen, whose writings and dissertation were centered on Roethke; a Roethke poetry performance by River Junction Poets; and a presentation by students involved in the Roethke Home Museum oral history project currently funded by MHC. All events dovetail with presentation of the prestigious American poetry prize, Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize at SVSU. Open House (1941) was the name of Roethke’s first collection of poems. Grant funds are also being requested to provide teacher resources, an updated Roethke tour book, a 2009 Roethke calendar, a poetry unit for secondary and introductory college students studying Roethke, and finally, a Roethke student video project where secondary and college students develop and submit short videos on Roethke and his community for a prize.
