Jaume Plensa -- (2008)

Grant Awarded: April 2008

Type of Grant: Michigan People, Michigan Places ... Our Stories, Our Lives

Sponsor: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Contact: Linda Thompson, 616-977-7685, lthompson@meijergardens.org

Award: $15,000

Website: www.meijergardens.org/

This is the only American venue for Jaume Plensa’s work. The sculpture addresses concepts of individuality, humanity, communication, understanding, philosophy, and spirituality. According to the proposal, literature is critical to his creations, especially themes revealed in Dante, Shakespeare, Blake, and the Old Testament. The exhibit seeks to teach visitors how to look at art and derive personal meaning; foster appreciation and understanding of the artist, compare visual art and the language of poetry; highlight the work of Grand Rapids poets and its 2008 Poet Laureate; give K-12 students practice in critical thinking skills by experiencing and discussing Plensa’s work.
