A Feast of Families -- (2007)

Grant Awarded: November 2007

Type of Grant: Michigan People, Michigan Places ... Our Stories, Our Lives

Sponsors: Mitchell Elementary School

Collaborators: American House-Carpenter

Contact: Kitty Donohoe, 734-973-2998, kitdonohoe@aol.com

Award: $5,000

This is an intergenerational cultural and historical project that includes two fourth grade classes working with seniors in the community. Songs will be written and performed based on oral histories the students collect from the seniors. Kitty Donohoe (songwriter/musician in MHC’s A&H Touring Directory) will spend five days at the school writing and refining the songs while working in small groups with the children. During the interviews the students will also collect recipes from the seniors with the intent of connecting to the ethnic background or timeframe of the senior residents. A public performance of the songs written by the students and a reception afterwards featuring some of the provided recipes will showcase the project. Songs will also be performed at an assembly held at Mitchell School. Project director has conducted a pilot of this in early 2007 using one fourth grade class. It proved to be socially and culturally relevant for students and seniors alike. This is an expansion of that pilot project.
