The Grand Rapids Humanites Council: Looking Back, Looking Forward: Our 30-Year History and Our Future

Grant Awarded: April 2006

Type of Grant: Humanities Project Grant

Sponsor: Grand Rapids Area Council for the Humanities

Contact: Cheryl Van Til, grhuman@gvsu.edu

Website: www.grhumanities.org

Award: $15,000

The Grand Rapids Humanities Council will build on its 30-year history with enhanced versions of previous programs funded by the Michigan Humanities Council. This includes "Life Journey with Books" and "Biography" discussion series with author visits and Michigan-themed books. A three-part "Milestones" series will concentrate on books and film that debuted or won awards in 1976, when the GRHC was founded. Three new projects will also be provided to the public: 1) "Looking Forward," which will examine books and film about important contemporary issues that will have long term implications for cultural development; 2) a two-day visit by best-selling Michigan author Elizabeth Kostova (The Historian) with a public program and participation in annual writers conference; 3) "Generations Share Reading" will involve four videotaped sessions with adults reading their favorite children's book to their children, grandchildren, or other family members.
