(1) What I've done for now is a couple of things that, together, make the Newton work with Endnotes:
DOWNLOADING
- I've created a special style in EndNotes [download] that I used in the past for posting references on the internet. It eliminates formatting, and uses _ instead of italics for titles. Like this: _Title_.
- I exported all of my EndNote references (about 650) to a text file in this style.
- I did a search-replace of every carriage return, inserting two carriage returns for each one, to space things out better.
- I wrote the words "LETTER X" in between each alphabetical grouping of references.
- I then converted this text file into a package using "Paperback," a freeware program to create newton books from textfiles. In this program I set it to create a table of contents from whatever follows the word "LETTER" and then delete these lines from the package. I also set it to include the paperback reader software.
- Voila - all your references are on the Newton! You may also wish to install "QuickFind" which allows you to avoid searching in this package, or only search in this package. You can thus do full text search of your references, and then cut and copy them wherever you want! Some kind of scrapbook, or clipboard program will let you copy multiple entries at once (tell me if you find something that works well for this).
UPLOADING
- I use some add on programs which allow me to easily insert text (ProPoint). And I created @Ref templates which I can then fill in in Works. These can then be imported as text files to the Mac with NCU. Then EndNote can import these.
- The templates look like this:
%O Book
%A Author
%D Date
%T Title
%I Publisher
%C City
%K Keywords
%X Notes
%O Journal Article
%A Author
%D Date
%T Title
%J Journal
%V Volume
%N Number
%P Pages
%K Keywords
%X Notes
Then just select the appropriate word and replace it with the right information!
(2) Notepad
There is a program in the works called FormIt (it exists, but it needs work before it will work with the MP2000). This allows you to create stationary forms for the Newton notepad. Thus, you can quickly enter information into the Notepad and then export it to the desktop with a program like RCU. This will make writing down references easier. Doesn't solve the download problem...
