Apple Remote Access 3.0

Apple Remote Access 3.0 works almost like normal FileSharing - either via AppleTalk or via TCP/IP. All you need is the usual bunch of control panels. The "Remote Access" control panel looks almost identical to the "PPP" control panel from the OT/PPP package - almost, that is...

The Remote-Access control panels serves a double function.

1. It works as the usual PPP frontend

2. It contains the ARA functionality - both for the server and for the client. The only difference between the two is the servers ability to answer calls, but you guessed that ;-)

Lets take a look at the client first:

We don't have to comment this one, do we?

Now, what differentiates the server from the client?

The server has an additional entry in the "Remote Access" menu (the equivalent to the PPP menu):

Answering...

Select this entry and you'll see this:

As usual, this panel doesn't really need very much explanation.

IMHO, the most striking feature of ARA 3.0 is its simplicity and "elegance".

Need a proof? Take a look at the Users & Groups control panel:

ARA simply adds an entry to the usual privilige pop-up menu.

You can even set ARA to call back.

All you still have to do is set up your modem (or ISDN card) in the modem control panel. That's it. Now you're ready to:

  • Dial into the personal server using a modem or ISDN and use AppleTalk FileSharing as if your Mac were connected to the server via a normal networking cable.
  • Dial into the personal server using a modem or ISDN and use FileSharing via TCP/IP services.
  • Dial into the personal server using a modem or ISDN and use TCP/IP services as if the server Mac were a PPP server. (Although I must admit that I have never tried this option)
