Subject: Announcement: "Tennessee History," no. 2, published

Dear fellow H-localers,

The second issue of "Tennessee History", reporting on the ongoing exploration of the past in the Volunteer State, is just off the press. It's a theme issue on "Teaching
Tennessee History." The lead article is an interview with Dr. Michael Hartoonian, president of the National Council for the Social Studies. He will be speaking at the meeting of the Tennessee affiliate in March.

An article on "Increasing Resources for Tennessee's Classrooms" describes the work of Discover Tennessee, an organization of volunteers that has developed a resource guide, maps, and continuing education projects for history teachers. Dr. Jim Akenson, executive director of the Tennessee Council for the Social Studies, contributes a guest editorial on "What Teachers of Tennessee History Need."

The issue also presents regular features on:

• what's going on at the sites, societies, and museums across the state;
• an update on local activities for the Tennessee bicentenary;
• research in progress; and
• an analysis of the implications for history of the recently released report of the Tennessee Commission on Practical Government.
