Eddie Woodard, regarding "a book" on museum management, I'm afraid your instructor is correct--there isn't one, simple, good one. I teach an introductory course for our undergraduates, called The History Museum, and I use the "ancient" 2nd edition of G. Ellis Burcaw's _Introduction to Museum Work_. But I supplement with other items, and I also give our students a bibliography I have prepared, on "Museums and Their Management," with a selected list of about 300 titles.

In my bibliography the bulk of the "management" titles are actually drawn from the larger, more general world of management of non-profit institutions and/or the more recent bibliography in "cultural resources management." (A number of such titles are for sale through the fine bookstore of the American Association of Museums, and if you do not have a copy of their current catalog, you ought to contact them for a copy [free].)

Should you (or anyone else) want to consult my bibliography, we have posted it to our Mary Washington College gopher. If you have Gopher access you can point to us with with

gopher gopher.mwc.edu

Otherwise we are available through the University of Minnesota gopher which carries a very long list of world-wide gopher servers. Go to their gopher, then to list for North American, then USA, then Virginia, then Mary Washington College.

If you use a WWW browser the URL for our gopher is

gopher://gopher.mwc.edu

Once in our Mary Washington College gopher, go to Academic Programs, then to Historic Preservation, then to Bibliographies, then to History Museums.

And--to you or anyone else using my bibliography--_please_ let me know of any errors I may have typed in, and also any titles you would particularly recommend for me to add--a process I expect to carry out during the summer, as I prepare to give that course again in the fall.

I hope this will lead you to some useful books.
