H-Local is the list for state and local history and museum studies. H-Local wishes to foster discussion among teachers, scholars, and practitioners of local and state history and museum professionals. Below you will find some technical information about how to use this list. A survey questionnaire will arrive in your mailbox shortly. The survey is designed to help us make this a more effective list.

Subscription Instructions

To subscribe to H-LOCAL, send the following message to LISTSERV@H-NET.MSU.EDU:

How to Use H-Local

1. To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to H-Local@H-NET.MSU.EDU. Your message will be automatically intercepted and sent to the moderators, who will decide whether to post it. Please be sure to sign your message (with your name, email address and affiliation at the START of your message.)

If you REPLY to a message from H-Local, your reply does NOT go to the person who wrote the message. It goes to the moderator instead. (Use your SEND or WRITE command to write individuals.)

2. All subscription commands should go to: LISTSERV@H-NET.MSU.EDU. These commands include:

         UNSUB H-Local (erases your name from the rolls)
         SET H-Local NOMAIL (temporarily turns off mail)
         SET H-Local MAIL   (turns mail back on again)
         SET H-Local DIGEST (gives you one long message every day,
               containing the full text of the days' posts.)
         INDEX H-Local (shows the list of files and logs)
         GET H-Local LOG9409b (gets logs= all messages posted in
               year 1994, month 9 = Sept, week b = 2nd week)

How to Search the H-Local Archives

1. HOW TO SEARCH the H-Local logs for key words YYYY and ZZZZZ (search limited to any dates you want, such as 6 May to 29 Aug)

2. The list of names and email addresses of subscribers to H-Local can not be obtained by the usual command REVIEW H-Local. Instead, please ask the moderator for a copy. Eventually we will have our own database of H-Local subscribers. An individual survey message will shortly follow. Please fill out and return the form to H-Local@H-NET.MSU.EDU.
