I'd be interested in any good sources regarding polygamy, or if nothing else, names of some of the major cases -- If you wish, you can b/c me at hvantuyl@admin.ac.edu

Editor's Note:
Federal authorities prosecuted Mormons after the Civil War. The best knowncase resulting from this was Reynolds v. US (1879) where Mormons claimed the anti-polygamy law violated the First Amendment. The case is 98 US 145. See also Kenneth David Driggs, "The Mormon Church-State Confrontation in 19th-Century America," Journal of Church and State 30 (Spring 1988): 272-289. The standard texts cover this subject. See Urofsky, A March of Liberty and Benedict, Blessings of Liberty.

Another excellent book that covers persecution of Mormons is Arrington & Bitton, The Mormon Experience: A History of the Latter Day Saints (1979). The Supreme Court upheld application of bigamy laws against the Mormons' Free Exercise claim in Reynolds v. United States, 98 U.S. (8 Otto) 145 (1878).

For an interesting discussion of Mormons as outsiders see R. Laurence Moore, "Religious Outsiders and the Making of Americans" from Oxford U. Press. It might provide some helpful context.

Subject: thanks for polygamy

From: hishpv@admin.ac.edu (Hubert van Tuyll)

I would like to thank all those who sent me information regarding polygamy law. Due to an error on my part I lost the addresses of those who replied and am unable to send individual thanks. Please ascribe this to incompetence rather than rudenessHubert
