I am working on a legal history of the abolition/elimination/disappearance of slavery in Islamic communities over the past two centuries. I have a basic working set of sources but most are secondary. I plan to begin archival research in the spring. If anyone has info on primary sources in English, Arabic, or Turkish, I would greatly appreciate it. I would also welcome leads concerning sources in the american diplomatic correspondence if such is available. Thanks in advance.

I realize you are looking for archival sources, but if you want to include an epilogue on current slavery, you might want to ask Human Rights Watch/Africa for reports on the persistence of slavery in Mauritania and to contact the World Anti-Slavery Society in London, which I believe is still active.

Bernie - I have nothing in response to your request, but seeing your name on the net made me want to say hi and ask how things are going. Best regards, Louise H.

Dr. Wakin:

Thanks for your suggestion. I've corresponded with both those organizations. I have the Human Rights Watch reports on Mauritania and Sudan; the Anti-Slavery Society hasn't responded yet. Please let me know if anything else comes to mind or you encounter any other references. Thanks again.

Peace,
