I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a complete citation for a book called something like ENGLISH LAW BOOKS IN AMERICA. It covers the 18th century. I have absolutely no idea who the author or the publisher is or when it was published. Love to know. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for other articles or books that deal with the same subject (legal textbooks in use in the US or the textbook tradition in general) they would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Tina Loo

I don't know if this is what you are after, but John H. Baker has written a work entitled *English Legal MSS in the United States of America* (London: Seldon Society, 1990). Vol. II covers 1558-1902. As you can see, this doesn't cover texts, but perhaps it may be of some use.

In response to Tina Loo's request for sources on (English?) legal textbooks in use in America, she might check the following (in no particular order):
W.M. Billings, "Justices, Books, Laws, and Courts in Seventeenth-Century Virginia," 85 LAW LIBRARY JOURNAL 277-296 (1993).
W.H. Bryson, CENSUS OF LAW BOOKS IN COLONIAL VIRGINIA (1978).
H.A. Johnson, IMPORTED EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LAW TREATISES IN AMERICAN LIBRRARIES 1700-1799 (1978).
J.A. Conley, "Doing It by the Book: Justice of the Peace Manuals and English Law in Eighteenth Century America," 6 JOURNAL OF LEGAL HISTORY 257-298 (1985).
J. Parrish, "Law Books and Legal Publishing in America, 1760-1840," 72 LAW LIBRARY JOURNAL 355-452 (1979).
E. Wolf, II, "Lawyers and Law Books," in THE BOOK CULTURE OF A COLONIAL AMERICAN CITY (1988).
I also recommend the chapters on the legal profession and legal literature in Lawrence Friedman's HISTORY OF AMERICAN LAW. Hope this helps.

I am just wading through my e-mail for the holiday period (I tried to suspend a few lists, honest, but the listservs refused to listen).
I would be interested to know if you got any reply to this.
