Description: Doing summer research in Mexico City? I have a fully-furnished spare bedroom in an apartment I am renting in Coyoacan, Mexico City, colonia Pedregal de Carrasco, very near to UNAM. The apartment includes reliable high-speed wifi internet, a washer, couches, tables, cable tv, phone service, a lockable cage on the roof for drying laundry, and a tinaco (water tank) so we don't run out of water when the city cuts it off (which happens a lot in this part of Mexico City). The complex has 24 hour security, and the neighborhood is very quiet and a nice place to live.

For transportation, it is just a short bus ride to line 3 of the metro or to line 1 of the Metrobus.

The bedroom has a twin-size bed, sheets, a side table and lamp, and a closet. The room will be available from June 1-Nov 30. I should also note that my two short-haired dogs will be here until the beginning of August when I will ship them back to my wife.

I am asking $75 a week (US) or $300/month plus half the gas and electric bills, which are very cheap. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will get back to you ASAP.

    Update: Tue, 18 Jun 2013 16:05:30 -0400

Description: This apartment in Mexico City will be available in it's entirety as of mid-August (see previous post for description). If you will be starting a grant in the Fall, this would be an ideal place. I've really enjoyed living here and I definitely recommend the neighborhood. The rent is $8,500 pesos/month, which includes reliable internet, cable TV, and a phone line. The only other bills are gas and electricity, which are quite cheap. A month of deposit is also required, but you don't need a fiador like you do for many apartment in Mexico City. The apartment is also dog-friendly (maybe cats too), if you will be traveling with pets.

Also, if possible I would like to stay in the apartment and rent one of the bedroom until late October, but that's not necessary. Feel free to email with any questions or if you would like to get in touch with the landlord. Thanks!

It's 10 minutes from Metro Sevilla on the Pink Line, 15 from Chapultepec Park and the Zona Rosa. There are lots of cool cafes, restaurants and theaters nearby, with a produce shop right across the street. You'd be sharing the apartment with three other people (a Mexican guy and two European girls), and a very cute laborador retriever. Description: I have a private room available for rent in a large, newly renovated house in the beautiful, quiet Colonia Providencia neighborhood of Guadalajara. This is a \"casa de asistencia\", and not a shared apartment/house, a convenient place to live for someone completely unfamiliar with GDL and just establishing residence here. I\'m located roughly equidistant between downtown Zapopan and downtown Guadalajara, near the major intersection of Av. Las Americas and Lopez Mateos (Glorieta Colon), convenient for catching local buses. Grocery stores and many fine restaurants are also within walking distance.

Rooms are furnished, extremely spacious (approx. 20ft x 20ft), each with a private bathroom, walk-in closets, tv w/ cable and dvd player, high-speed wireless internet available. Rent includes all utilities, plus maid/laundry service. One meal Mon-Sat would also be included with other amenities. One off-street parking spot is also available (at an additional cost).

Rent is ~$500 US dollars per room (currently renting at $5500 pesos), including all amenities/services listed above. Prefer a minimum semester long lease (4-5 month), but can possibly also accommodate shorter stays.

      Dear Dennis,

I believe you inquired about compiling a list of potential housing in Mexico City. I am currently there, and cannot recommend my place more highly. I'm not sure what info you'd like, so here is:

      (1) The location is in Colonia San Jose Insurgentes, immediately south of Mixcoac. It is a lovely, safe neighborhood, walking distance to the Mercado Mixcoac, to Orange Line Metro stop Barranca del Muerto, and between Revolucion and Insurgentes. The Insurgentes bus/peseros go directly to UNAM and the hemeroteca. For the ambitious, it is also walking distance to San Angel, Coyoacan and Gandhi's.

      (2) There are 2 large, two-bedroom apartments, each with a lovely patio. Above, are 3 small studiosd, each with a private patio. The access to the studios is up a narrow, circular, wrought-iron staircase. The building is well-maintained, clean, and everything is quite new (appliances, "Mexicanrustic" furniture, linens, etc.) Although the studios are small (single bed), they are well-designed and efficient, with lots of storage.

      (3) I am not positive about rents. I believe the larger apartments are about $1,000 US/month. The studio is 2800 pesos/month. Plus utilities.

      (5) The apartments have telephones.

      (4) The landlady lives on-site and is delightful. She also speaks very good English. Her name is Ana Leon Palacios, her tele (and FAX) 5-611-4830. She is not on-line. She likes quiet tenants.

The building and neighborhood are delightful, convenient and secure. I feel very fortunate to have found it (through a response, by the way, from H-LatAm!!)

CASA DE LOS AMIGOS is a community that receives 2,500 visitors each year, many working in human rights, community development, and research fields. At any time there are 45 international visitors staying in our international guest house. The Casa was founded in 1956 by Quakers as part of inter-cultural project within North America and with cultures worldwide.

Guests can reserve a bed in the shared dormitory for 55 pesos per night, a single room for 65 pesos, double room for 110 pesos, double room with bath 130 pesos, double open plan apartment with kitchen 150 pesos. (US$1 = 8 pesos)

We are busy and visitors on a fixed schedule are advised to reserve by e.mail, fax or phone before arrival.

To keep community lively and friendly guests must stay at least 2 nights and a maximum of 15 nights in 3 months.

To stay for longer, volunteers and researchers may make a special application for a long stay of up to 3 months. The Casa likes to have long stay guests who are contributing to the inter'cultural relationships both through their work, and their active presence in the Casa. Please send e.mail requests for a long stay application forms to Guest House

    - Jean Carey.

We also welcome reservations for groups of up to 16 people for visits for study and volunteer work.

The Casa offers a conference room for up to 60 people (free to groups),

A library-meditation room, hand laundry area, guests living room, patio, communal kitchen, and downtown location close to the metro.

The Casa offers shared breakfast on Monday thru Friday mornings. It offers an excellent menu of conversation, granola, oatmeal and fresh fruit for 10 pesos.

The Casa is the starting place for many people staying long term in the city; hence there are notices and gossip about apartment shares becoming available frequently. Failing that, the Universal and Segundo Mano newspapers offer excellent choice. There are a variety of boarding houses and so forth.

All these options are usually about 800-1500 pesos per month. We recommend anybody planning to live in Mexico City needs to budget a basic US$300-400 per month for food, lodging, transport and movies. Extra is needed for trips out of town.

The Casa also organises seminars on contemporary social issues in Mexico City. They are open to individuals or groups. These are fully organised, facilitated and translated by a team of coordinators in the Service and Education Project. These have been used by University of Maryland, University of Southern Illinois, Gettysburg College, Earlham College, Guildford College, Kings College (London, Ontario).

Our next seminar is "Faith and Social Action in Mexico" Jan 30 - Feb 8. Cost US$304 including dorm bed, meals, local transport, donations to groups visited etc.

I hope that this answers your enquiry.

For my money there is any number of cozy and inexpensive hotels slightly to the west of the zocalo. At different times I've spent months in the Hotel Atlanta, as have some of my friends. It's at Allende and B. Dominguez, no. 31. Most recently I paid about $14 US per night. Ph. 518-1200 y 03.

This location is nice for dining, sightseeing, and convenient for access to the Metro.

    Buena suerte y buen viaje!

I would recommend an apartment I stayed in last summer for two months.  It's located just two blocks north of Chapultepec Metro, within walking distance of the Condesa, Zona Rosa, and Polanco.  The owner, Marco Antonio Rodriguez, rents 2-3 bedrooms, all with private bath and full amenities.  The apartment was quite pleasant, and Marco extremely friendly and helpful.
