Housing Information for Traveling Researchers
Guatemala
If anyone is working
in Guatemala City
for short research trips, I
would recommend Xamanek
Backpacker's Lodge. This is a brand new
place (opened 29 June 2005), and is more
like a B & B than a
backpacker's hostel--and seems to
attract human rights workers,
researchers, etc. It costs $14.00/night,
includes airport pick-up
and drop-off, and daily breakfast. The
rooms and bathrooms are
shared, and there is a women's only room
that has it's own bathroom.
Amenities: nice living and dining room
area, beautiful back
patio. It also has a kitchen open
to guests. It's in Zona 10, but
it's easy to get to the archives by
taking bus 101 or bus 82. I
found it to be a better value than Hotel
Spring--especially because
of the kitchen. Lavanderia
and groceries are close. The manager, Ana
Cristina Sost,
is a tremendous source of info about the
city--including helping find long-term
housing, and speaks English
and French fluently.
