Noah,
First of all, congratulations on having the opportunity to do dissertation research in Rio. What's your subject?
There are multiple apartment-rental companies in Rio de Janeiro, many of them (the companies) located in Copacabana. It's really not too difficult--depending on price--to find places, so ione strategy is to get an inexpensive hotel for the first few days, find your bearings and get a place. There are several reasonable hotels in the Flamengo area. If you or your adviser has any professional contacts in Brazil, I'd write to them--since they might provide help too. As you may know from this list, CEPEDOC is on line, and has a "recados: section where people can list current research. You might submit to them--noting your topic, when you will be arriving, and then add that you'd appreciate info. re. apartments.
Boa Sorte,
Jerry Greenfield
