Medding Shmuel Almog Ezra Mendelsohn Yisrael Gutman Menahem Kaufman Managing Editor: Eli Lederhendler Yehiam Weitz Background and Objectives: Studies in Contemporary Jewry, the annual English-language publication of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University, is published for the Institute by Oxford University Press (New York). Five volumes have appeared to date, including the 1989 volume released in June of 1989. Each volume contains a collection of essays dealing with one central issue in twentieth century Jewish history, politics, sociology or culture, and presents several separate essays on relevant topics. The second part of each volume includes reviews of recent books and listings of new doctoral dissertations from around the world. Yahadut Zemanenu, the Hebrew language journal of the Institute, contains articles, essays and reviews. Published locally, it is aimed primarily at the Israeli academic audience. The Bibliographical Center in Contemporary Jewry has been computerizing annotated, indexed descriptions of the material in these journals in order to facilitate the editing, reviewing and administrative processes involved in publication. The online availability of the descriptions also increases access to the journals' contents. Current Status: -Volume 6 of Studies in Contemporary Jewry, in production at Oxford University Press, is due to be published in early 1990. -Volume 5 of Yahadut Zemanenu is in production. -Annotated and indexed descriptions of material in these journals is now available online through the ALEPH computer network. Future Plans: -Continuation of ongoing registration of indexed, annotated descriptions. -Computerization, editing and publication of future volumes using the ALEPH program.
