De Lutis" Subject: Call for Papers: Evocations of the Holocaust in Contemporary Canadian Arts and Literature Graduate Student Conference May 4, 2000 Evocations of the Holocaust in Contemporary Canadian Arts and Literature The Art History Department of Concordia University invites proposals from graduate students in all disciplines for a conference to be held May 4, 2000, at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre in conjunction with an exhibition of contemporary Canadian artists representing the Holocaust. The conference "Evocations of the Holocaust in Contemporary Canadian Arts and Literature" will address impacts of the Holocaust in recent Canadian art, architecture, film, theatre, music and literature. In the last twenty years, the unremitting shadow of the Shoah has evoked moral and aesthetic statements in Canadian arts and imaginative literature. Placing themselves in the position of confronting Nazism and the Holocaust, artists and creative writers have accessed this past in a different way of knowing, via presentations and performances in the interpretive sphere of the arts. Proposals of one page or less should outline your area of research and the focus of your presentation. Graduate student artists and creative writers who wish to discuss their own representations of the Holocaust are also asked to submit three slides of their work, or examples in related media. Some of our activities have resulted in the publication of: A Second Exodus: The American Movement to Free Soviet Jews; When Philadelphia Was the Capital of Jewish America, by the Associated University Presses; The Tribal Basis of American Life: Racial, Religion and Ethnic Groups in Conflict by Praeger; and The Philadelphia Fels 1880-1920: A Social Portrait by Associated University Presses. We are also close to having a major publishing house accept a manuscript on Defining Roles and Changing Ideals: Historical Perspectives on Women and American Judaism, edited by Pamela Nadell and Jonathan Sarna. As you know, a considerable literature exists on the origins and nature of American Jewish liberalism. We have begun to explore recently the history of American Jewish political conservatism, a subject that has received little scholarly attention. At a conference we sponsored, with the Jewish Studies and History Departments at American University in Washington, DC last April, a number of distinguished scholars including George Nash, Jonathan Sarna, and Richard Gid Powers presented papers exploring this topic. We have made arrangements with the journal American Jewish History to publish one, possibly two special issues made up of papers delivered at the conference. As we have done with several other under-explored topics upon which we have concentrated resources, we wish to encourage young and more mature scholars to undertake investigations of specific topics focusing on the history of American Jewish political conservatism. We are interested, for example, in helping to fund research on the following topics: * the biblical and historical origins of American Jewish political conservatism. David Dalin discussed this at our conference. * a number of figures, including Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand, Leo Strauss, Will Herburg, Marvin Liebman, Frank Meyers, Willie Schlamm and others who in the 1940's and 1950's were developing an important body of conservative thought or became activists in the conservative movement just getting underway. Several of these individuals were discussed in a paper written by George Nash for our conference. * Jewish neo conservatives like Irving Kristol, Nathan Glazer, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Dan Bell, and other more recent figures. We envision articles, perhaps books on some of these figures. * The new generation of Jewish conservatives - William Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, David Gelernter, among others. In a brief communication, we can only be suggestive of areas of investigation. We will welcome proposals about the subject from those who would like to undertake such research, including graduate students interested in this subject for doctoral dissertations. The deadline for sending proposals is April 11, 2000. Grant awards may range in size from $1,000 to $5,000. The number and size of grants awarded depends on the number and quality of proposals received. Proposals should include no more than five, typewritten, double-spaced pages, along with a C.V. and one letter of recommendation from an advisor or colleague.
