EOE/AA. ------------------------------------------------------------ CALL FOR PAPERS ------------------------------------------------------------ From: Robert M. Salkin Subject: [Repeat] Call for Manuscripts, _The Reader's Guide to Judaism_ The Reader's Guide to Judaism, a bibliographic guide to English-language books and essays on Judaism, is seeking contributors to write brief, 1,000-word essays. The Reader's Guide to Judaism will be published in the autumn of 1999 by the Chicago-London academic reference publisher Fitzroy Dearborn. While the book will undoubtedly be of value to advanced users, it aims in the first instance to cater to undergraduates and "intelligent nonspecialists." It is not, however, intended as another one-volume encyclopedia. Rather, it is to be a survey of the most important, valuable, and appropriate secondary literature on the study of Judaism as well as primary sources- in- translation. Given the target constituency, works described in the Reader's Guide will necessarily be in English (either originally or in translation) but by no means necessarily in print. The Reader's Guide to Judaism will assess the literature in approximately 450 signed essays, in a volume of approximately 700 pages in large-page, double-column format. The list of entries has been created in consultation with the advisory board. Naturally it aspires to a balanced and authentic reflection of the scope of Judaism's preoccupations, but constraints of available English-language scholarship have influenced the list. Typically, each essay in the Reader's Guide will be 1,000 words in length and discuss between five and eight titles. We would be happy to offer bibliographic assistance, if required. All essays will be June 4. Two sample entries from Fitzroy Dearborn's Reader's Guide to Literature in English are available over the internet at these addresses below: http://www.fitzroydearborn.com/ashbery.htm http://www.fitzroydearborn.com/ballad.htm For the standard-length essay the publishers can offer a fee of $50. In exceptional instances where a wealth of literature on major topics demands essays double the normal length, contributors will be paid double the normal fee. Payment is on publication. Contributors will receive a copy of their essays and will be able to purchase copies of the book at half-price (the full retail price will be $125). Names of contributors will appear at the end of their essays, and there will be full "Notes on Contributors" at the end of the volume. If you would like to write for the Reader's Guide, please contact the publisher for a list of unassigned topics via email at rsalkin@fitzroydearborn.com or fax at 312-587-1049. Please include a curriculum vitae. If you cannot yourself contribute, please feel free to pass this information along to anyone else who might be in a position to contribute. Robert M. We have been trying to compile a comprehensive and complete bibliography on the Scrolls (1995 to the present) and we post the listings every Monday on our web site. (Note to users: these listings can also be searched for authors, keywords, etc.). Although the on-line version does not include reviews, we do include them in our database. At the end of the three year period, the results of the bibliography project will be published in hard copy. Because we wish to include as much relevant material as possible, I am asking list members who are scholars in the field to help us by sending references which we may lack (esp. short review articles or articles published in lesser-known journals). Please note that we are only interested in articles and books dated 1995 or later. If you have additions, please write to me privately at msorion@mscc.huji.ac.il. If you are not sure what we have, you can search under your name on the Bibliography Search page of our web site or go directly to the Bibliography page and check the alphabetical files. If you do not have web access, please e-mail me privately and I will send you a text file.
