The Workshop will also host performances of Yiddish theatre by artists from Britain and abroad. We invite papers from a variety of perspectives, including drama criticism, theatre history, performance studies, theory, socio- cultural history, ethnomusicology and comparative studies of Yiddish and other forms of theatre and drama. It is envisaged that the participants of the proposed workshop will both offer new scholarship in these disparate areas and contribute to piecing together a broad interdisciplinary picture of Yiddish drama and theatre. Stipends towards the cost of conference travel will be available to a limited number of participants with insufficient institutional funding. Applicants in need of additional funding should include a statement to that effect in their proposal. Applicants should submit brief abstracts for proposed papers, to run no longer than 25 minutes, by February 15th, 1999, and will receive notification of their inclusion in the programme by March 30th. Initiated by The Shalom Institute, which organises the Melton Program, JFU and INFOcus, it is hoped that this community learning venture will be the largest and most diverse Jewish community education program Australia has seen. "Limmud" ("Learning") has had outstanding success in Great Britain and organises annual conferences hosting literally thousands of participants. In Sydney the aim is to present sessions from a wide array of topics ranging from Torah to Jewish music, film, creative arts, philosophy, history, Jewish sociology and parenting skills, or other topics of interest to participants. It is anticipated that presenters will come from all sections of the Jewish community and include a number of leading international Jewish scholars and educators. It is hoped that participants will come from all sections of the international Jewish community. We will be delighted to welcome overseas participants and presenters such as Hirsh Goodman, Founding editor and senior journalist with the Jerusalem Report, and Daniel Fainstein, head of Argentina's Jewish education system. Limmud-Oz will be reaching out to a new and enthusiastic audience, some of whom will be engaging with the Jewish community for the first time since childhood. Already there are volunteers to run workshops on yoga, storytelling and Mishna, and young musicians have promised to organise jam sessions experimenting with contemporary Jewish styles. Added to this, the organisers invite you to use this opportunity to share your own Jewish knowledge and interests. Regarding more information concerning the guidelines for Limmud-Oz, please contact the address below. The cost of the conference, which is non-residential, is only $120 (Aust) for the two days plus opening night or $80 for those presenting. To get involved either go to the Limmud-Oz 1999 web site at http://www.join.org.au/limmud-oz to complete and return a presenter's application form, or email peta@shalom.edu.au and she will send you one and/or any further information you require.
