'Nothing to be written here' has played to great success all across North America at festivals, university campuses and art galleries. It follows the story of my father's exile from Austria in 1938, arrival in England, and subsequent deportation to Canada as a civilian internee. Even though he, and two thousand others were refugees from Nazi oppression, he was interned alongside Nazi PoWs, caught in a bizarre moment of mistaken identity that lasted for three years. I grew up knowing little about this story; additionally, it does not have a public place in Canada's history. The video unravels my inheritance of this story, told through the use of archival footage, original documents, visits to former camp sites, and an elegant layering of images - fire, handwritten letters, water, a boat and a suitcase. The result is a deep and vivid essay that examines the construction of history and memory, Jew and nation, and public and private narratives. There is a logical cross-over of audiences between academic departments: Judaic studies, art, film, Canadian studies, women's studies, history, and campus Hillel groups. I would be happy to send more information and a preview copy to those who are interested.
