No prior experience in Israel is expected and all levels of religious observance, from secular to Orthodox, are welcomed and accommodated. The Fellowship has five components. The first is part-time study of Hebrew texts or Jewish studies, which takes place at an approved institution of the Fellow's choosing. Approved institutions currently include the Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies, the Shalom Hartman Institute, Elul, the Conservative Yeshiva, the Liberal Yeshiva, Yakar, and any Israeli university. The second component is a part-time voluntary internship, which Fellows set up in conjunction with the Dorot Foundation. A third element of the Fellowship is attendance at a series of monthly seminars and trips within Israel that examine contemporary Israeli and Jewish life. The Fellowship year begins in July with intensive Hebrew training. It is anticipated that Fellows will gain proficiency in Hebrew during the course of the year. Finally, Fellows must live with Israelis during their Fellowship year. The Fellowship's aim is to enhance the skills and personal development of future Jewish lay leaders and Fellows are expected to be involved in their communities and in the network of Fellowship alumni when they return to North America. The Fellowship provides tuition at the Fellow's academic institution in Israel and a generous living stipend. Each year there are approximately 15 Fellows and Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis.
