The Curator is responsible for the management and development of Judaica Collections in the Library system as a whole, in addition to serving as the Librarian for the Center for Judaic Studies. The Curator works closely with faculty and students at Penn as well as with the Fellows at the Center for Judaic Studies. The Curator develops programs of instruction, outreach, and access and plays a key role in development efforts for Jewish Studies at Penn. The position offers someone of distinguished academic and professional achievements an opportunity to play a shaping role in the evolution of Jewish Studies at Penn. Background: Distributed among three separate libraries and including over 300,000 volumes as well as substantial rare book and manuscript collections and the Freedman Archive of Jewish Music, Penn's Judaica holdings constitute one of the largest and most important such collections in the country. These collections serve academic programs throughout the humanities and social sciences in addition to the Fellows Program at the Center for Judaic Studies (CJS). At the core of the collections is the CJS library. Formerly the library of Dropsie College, it is a major repository of source materials relating to the Bible and biblical antiquity, rabbinica, and classical Jewish literature up to the modern period. It holdings include over 500 fragments from the Cairo Genizah. Penn's Judaica collections form part of the 4.5 million volumes in the Library as a whole. The Penn Library serves over 20,000 students and approximately 10,000 faculty and employs a staff of 380 FTE staff. Qualifications: An advanced degree in Jewish Studies or cognate field (Ph.D. preferred) and a degree in library and information science or the equivalent in theory and practice.
