The databases included in this project are: - The Index to Articles in Jewish Studies ("RAMBI") - 83,000 records. - The Israel Union List of Serials - 95,000 records. - The general Union List of Israeli University Libraries - 3,200,000 records (which will be expanded to include other libraries as well). This project will be based on the ALEPH-500 software which will be enhanced to the project's specifications. It also includes conversion of the data in these files to a version of the international standard MARC format for bibliographic data and will be the first major implementation of this format for Hebrew data in Israel. The results of this project will be made publicly available and should facilitate the conversion of additional bibliographic data files. The time frame for this project is one year - but some of the results and data bases should be accessible within half a year. Information on project progress will be posted via internet lists such as HASAFRAN, IIRS-ASMI, JEWISHNT, etc. and at the project web site: http://www6.huji.ac.il/libnet/most98.html For further information, contact: Elhanan Adler Coordinator, Israel Inter-University Library Network c/o Jewish National and University Library P.O.B. 34165, Jerusalem 91341, Israel Email: elhanan@libnet1.ac.il Tel.: 972-2-6585005, FAX: 972-2-6511771, Home tel.: 972-2-6515977 --------- From: David Elazar Subject: The Elazar Classification System In August 1997, the 3rd edition of "A Classification System For Libraries of Judaica" was published by Jason Aronson Inc.(New Jersey USA). The authors, David and Daniel Elazar (Rishon LeZion and Jerusalem) contend that there was and is a need for a classification system for libraries with Judaic collections to classify and arrange these collections according to Jewish concepts using Jewish thought and terminology. This is in contrast to the familiar classification schemes like Dewey and LC which incorporate the Bible, Judaism and Israel into a general, non-Jewish, world of knowledge without relating the Biblical, Jewish, and Zionist (Israel) subjects to each other in the spirit of Jewish Tradition. A description in detail of "A CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR LIBRARIES OF JUDAICA," including discussions by librarians who have used previous editions is available on the Elazar home page at the following URL: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/6527/index.html (copy exactly as written - capital A's - best to cut and paste). The project is led by Dr. David Lyons, a renowned expert on Masora whose PhD thesis on the vocalization and Masora of the ancient Tiberian Pentateuch in the British Library was supervised by Prof. Israel Yeivin of the Hebrew University. In order to proceed with the project the Israel Institute for Bible and Masora is searching for grant funding. If anyone can suggest a source for grants for a project in Biblical text studies the Institute would be most appreciative. You may reply to my e-mail address (Richler@vms.huji.ac.il) and I will forward the message to Dr. Lyons. --------- From: Arieh Lebowitz Subject: 5th Biennial National Conference on Education - 2nd Call for Papers FIFTH BIENNIAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EDUCATION EDUCATION EXPO 98 MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA 12-14 July 1998 SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS CONTENTS: Theme Keynote Speakers Invitation Format for papers Timing Accommodation (discounted) Air Travel (discounted) Education Expo 98 Reply Form THEME: Schools As Learning Communities - Hakehilah Halomedet KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: ANDY HARGREAVES is Director of and Professor in the International Centre for Educational Change at the Ontario (Canada) Institute for Studies in Education.
