A fellowship of $18,000 will be given in the 1997-98 school year to a senior graduate student in the concluding stages of his or her dissertation whose research has been in the field of Jewish women's history. Efforts will be made to select a student whose work is compatible with the specific focus of the Center's major project on American Jewish women's religious history. The fellow will be selected in the spring of 1997 by Jonathan Sarna, professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University, Pamela Nadell, professor of history at American University, Morris Vogel, chairperson of the History Department at Temple University, the Center's director, Murray Friedman, and the Center's coordinator, Nancy Isserman. The fellowship will start September 1, 1997 and end June 30, 1998. During the fellowship year the student will be expected to teach a course on American Jewish history, preferably on American Jewish women's history, and give a lecture on his or her dissertation to the Temple University community and to other relevant academic groups in the area. This year will allow the student to work on getting his or her dissertation ready for publication or to begin work on a new project. The fellow does not have to live in Philadelphia for the year if he or she would be able to spend 1-2 days per week on the Temple campus on a per need basis.
