Contact NCJF for details THE KEY FROM SPAIN: THE SONGS AND STORIES OF FLORA JAGODA 2000 40 Minutes Color and B&W Directors Ankica Petrovic and Mischa Livingstone According to legend, when the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, they took with them the keys to their homes and synagogues hoping that one day they would return. They never did, but their Spanish cultural heritage remained a powerful influence in their lives. In this uplifting tale of survival and continuity, acclaimed Sephardic folksinger, Flory Jagoda, tells her story and sings songs both old and new in Ladino, the tongue of her ancestors. Flory grew up on the outskirts of Sarajevo, Bosnia. Under the threat of Nazi persecution, she fled to United States. Single-handedly she has revived the nearly forgotten musical traditions of her childhood. Her songs range from tales of thwarted love to reflections on the destruction of Sarajevo in the recent Bosnian war. Flory tells the story of her life, as she sings with warmth and passion. She celebrates life itself, delighting audiences with her songs and touching them with her story READ an interview with Director Mischa Livingstone by Rhonda Cowen, www.jewishtelegraph.com NOW SHOWING at: LA SEPHARDIC FILM FESTIVAL International Sephardic Film Festival, NY Other Sephardic film and videos from The NCJF If you have any questions about the above events or titles please email NCJF.If you like to be removed from our mailing list please reply with remove in the subject heading. Michael Brown, Director, Centre for Jewish Studies York University Toronto, Ontario -------------------- From: John Klier Subject: Journal East European Jewish Affairs Members of H-net may be interested in subscribing to the journal East European Jewish Affairs, published two times a year in London. Begun in 1968 to explore the history and culture of Jews in modern Eastern Europe, the journal established itself as the leading source of information about the Jews of the Soviet Union and the Eastern-bloc nations. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, EEJA has expanded its role to include the position of Jews in post-communist societies in Eastern Europe. EEJA has acquired two new sponsoring institutions, University College London and the Oxford Institute for Yiddish Studies, and a new publisher, Frank Cass Publishers Ltd. A special introductory offer is available to new subscribers. Complete information on EEJA may be found at the Frank Cass website at www.frankcass.com/jnls/eej.htm which contains a table of contents and abstracts of the current number. The current issue features a retrospective look at the contents of EEJA over the past thirty-two years, as well as an examination of the role of the so-called Jewish Oligarchs in contemporary Russia. EEJA is also publishing a series of surveys of archival materials in post-Soviet archives. These surveys make specific note of materials that are relevant to the study of the Holocaust. The journal also regularly publishes articles of interest to those who study the Holocaust. The journal also publishes material devoted to Yiddish language, literature and culture on a regular basis. -------------------- From: Ginsburg, Paul Subject: Shtetl Website The once vibrant Jewish community of Sudilkov, Ukraine was completely destroyed by the Germans during the Holocaust. It was known throughout the Jewish world as a center of the Hasidic movement, for its talis (prayer shawl) manufacturing, and its Jewish book printing. Today there are no Jews in Sudilkov. In order to remember this community, a website was created to preserve the Jewish history of Sudilkov.
