Greenbaum CONTENTS 1) Macintosh Hebrew word processor 2) Hebrew PC-Write 3) MS-DOS in Hebrew From: Avi Y. Feldblum or Date: Thu, 17 Aug 89 15:09:45 EDT Here are two items from mail.jewish readers: 1) Macintosh Hebrew word processor I would be grateful for any pointers to where I can get a Hebrew word procesor for the Mac2 and a Tanach database. I currently have a Davka product (Macktav) but that does not run under (American) MacOs 6.0.3. - it uses a special foreign language version of the MacOs for which it is hard to get updates. Also Macinhebrew is a useful DA but does not work on the Mac2. Are there any others? Thanks. I have not used it, but is has been on sale since the beginning of the year. (N.b.--unlike the English version, the foreign language versions are not shareware.) 3) MS-DOS in Hebrew From: Ron Kiener Date: Thu, 31 Aug 89 07:43 EST To all MS-DOS Hebrew users: I have just returned from Israel, where I saw a very interesting new product: MS-DOS in Hebrew. It seems that Microsoft is in the final debugging stages of a Hebrew version of MS-DOS. I saw a demo of MS-DOS 3.3, Hebrew version 1.1. It provides an environment for running standard DOS applications in Hebrew, in logical right-to-left order. Immediate plans call for a version of Microsoft Works and MS-WORD 5.0 to be fully supported, with appropriate printer drivers. I even saw a DOS shell in Hebrew. I saw WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 up on the screen, running in Hebrew and English, with full word wrap! Whether the current set of WordPerfect supplied printer drivers will work with DOS in Hebrew is unknown. This is not vaporware! Microsoft is developing this version of DOS as a direct outcome of developing DOS in Arabic, where the problem of right-to-left display was first encountered. I even have in my possession an official MS-DOS be-ivrit T-shirt, manufactured by the promotion department of Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. No, MS-DOS in Hebrew does not mean that the command line is in Hebrew. More precisely, MS-DOS in Hebrew creates a video environment for right-to-left data entry, with full Hebrew character support for Hercules, Hercules +, EGA, VGA, and Compaq plasma displays. Unfortunately, the version I saw is protected by one of those obnoxious key- plugs which must be attached to the parallel printer port. I do not know if this plug scheme is just for the beta version, or for the official release also. I was told that the final release of MS-DOS in Hebrew is a few months away. The current exclusive distributor for Microsoft products in Israel is debugging the product as designed by Microsoft. When the distributor and Microsoft agree that the product is stable, the product will be sold. I am not sure how it will be sold in the United States, but in Israel people should contact: P.C.
