October 23: Elk Rapids

Elk Rapids Area Historical Society will hold it's Potluck Dinner, Annual Meeting, & Monthly Program at 6 pm. At 7 pm Glenn Neumann presents the October program: Lumbering in Antrim County During the 1880s to 1930s. Glenn is well known to most Antrim County history devotees in the Chain of Lakes region. He has written about and lectured extensively on several topics. Glenn always brings the subject to life with a delightful style. If coming for the potluck dinner, annual meeting and program: just bring a dish to pass. If coming for the program only: A $5.00 donation for adults, $2.00 donation for students (underage 18) is requested at the door. Children admitted free. A McCormick Christmas will be held at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse from Noon till 4 pm. Holiday music, homemade cookies and hot cedar will be present; make your own ornament; enjoy a tour through the keepers dwelling and see the sights and smells of a holiday of the 1920's. A visit by Santa's reindeer and Santa is scheduled for mid-afternoon. This will be a great time for all ages. For more information please call (231) 386-7195.

A new exhibit at the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society Museum, opening for the season on Sunday, May 25, will visit the area's past with 13 Moments in Time: The Artist as Storyteller. Built around a selection of seldom-seen paintings and drawings completed in Saugatuck from 1898 to 2002, the exhibit evokes historical vignettes of Saugatuck and Douglas at the time each artwork was created. The Museum is open from Noon to 4 pm daily from Memorial Day through August, then Saturday/Sunday in September and October. Admission and parking are free.
