Scope of Course: A survey of the history of the Balkan peninsula in modern times (through about 1989-90); the development of Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, the Yugoslav lands, and Greece; a study of the rise and fall of Balkan communisms. Prerequisites: History 106 or 116 or permission of instructor. Readings: (all available at University of Richmond Bookstore): Text: Barbara Jelavich, History of the Balkans, II: The Twentieth Century Auxiliary text: M. Wesley Shoemaker, Russia, Eurasian States and Eastern Europe 1993 Collaterals: Ivo Andric, Bridge on the Drina Ismail Kadare, Chronicle in Stone Hugh Poulton, The Balkans: Minorities and States in Conflict A-V: time permitting, slides and/or films will be shown to supplement lectures and readings. Course requirements/grade composition: For undergraduate students: 24% Final exam (comprehensive, emphasis on material covered since 2nd midterm) 20% Higher of two midterm scores 18% Lower of two midterm scores 15% Independent work 18% Out-of-class papers 5% MAPS! For graduate students: 23% Final exam 19% Higher of two midterm scores 16% Lower of two midterm scores 23% Independent work 15% Out-of-class papers 4% MAPS! Independent work for undergraduates (refer to handouts): Option A: Research paper (at least ten pages) OR Option B: 600 pages of reading on the country (or topic) of your choice; reading reports required. One of your final exam questions will be based upon your independent work. Independent work for graduates - See instructor for details All students are encouraged and graduate students are required to use the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty transcripts in Boatwright Library and to become familiar with electronic databases such as Lexis-Nexis. Late paper policy (also applies to independent work): 24-hour grace period (actually until 5 P.M. of the following afternoon) without penalty. 1 letter grade penalty assessed for each additional 24-hour period.
