Might I ask what Mark Pittaway means by "recession, unemployment and insecurity" with regard to Austria? Unless Pittaway can come up with the figures, my understanding is that the truly remarkable achievement of Austria (and, I assume, government policy) in the 1990s has been to avoid anything approaching the same sort of "eurosclerosis" in terms of economic performance which has dogged most other European states. Joining the EU in this regard has been a generally acknowledged boon for the Austrian consumer. It is precisely Austria's relatively good performance, and its current high state of prosperity, which makes the whole political crisis that much more inexplicable, and, to my mind, truly a matter of concern.
