The Memoirs of Prince Metternich

Selections:

On Censorship (1808)
Renewal of the Carlsbad Decrees (1824)
Metternich on the Diet at Pressburg (1825)
The Death of Emperor Francis (1835)

The Memoirs of Prince Metternich were published in English by Charles Scribner's Sons between 1880 and 1882. They were originally published in French and German in 1879. The memoirs take up five volumes, published in three installments. Their veracity has been questioned by historians, who note that they were edited by the prince's son Richard Metternich, which has led many to fear that they are a selective reflection of Prince Metternich's activities.

In each text, original page numbers and page breaks are recorded, and the format of the original has been respected with the exception of line breaks. The reader will notice numbers marking breaks in the documents -- these numbers were inserted by the editors of the original memoirs as an ordering mechanism, nothing more.
