James P. Niessen, Editor, Review Editor, and Webmaster

James P. Niessen is a native of the state of New Jersey. Following studies at the Universities of Innsbruck, Vienna, and Notre Dame, he entered the graduate program at Indiana. While working on his dissertation on Transylvania during the 1860s he conducted research in Austria, Hungary, and Romania between 1982 and 1987, and was awarded the PhD in 1989. He has taught at Colgate University, Cornell College, the University of Southern Mississippi, the Central European University, Texas Tech, and Rutgers University. His publications include a volume in the Beck Papers series that he edited, Religious Compromise, Political Salvation: The Greek Catholic Church and Nation-building in Eastern Europe (1993), book reviews and fifteen articles in American, German, Hungarian, and Romanian journals, and electronic publications about H-Net. He was a member for 1998-2000 of the H-Net Executive Committee (and thereafter H-Net Council) and is a member of the editorial board of H-LIS. He serves as Vice President for Research & Publications of H-Net for 2000-2002 and chair of the organization's Research & Publications Committee. In the American Library Association he is chair of the History Librarians Discussion Group of the History Section, a unit of the Reference and User Services Association. He is a past president of the Association for the Bibliography of History, an affiliate of the American Historical Association, and a member of the collection development working group of the German Resources Project in the Association of Research Libraries. From 1994 to 2001 he was Librarian for History and Foreign Languages at Texas Tech University, and since August 2001 he has been World History Librarian at Rutgers University.
