Hugo Lane is an assistant professor at Polytechnic University in New York. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1985, received an MA in German from SUNY-Albany in 1989, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1999. His dissertation, entitled State Culture and National Identity in a Multi-ethnic Context: Lemberg 1772-1914, examines the emergence of distinct German, Polish and Ukrainian national identities within the sphere of high cultural institutions in Galicia. From 1992 through 1994 he served as a visiting lecturer at L`viv State University as part of the Civic Education Project. He is currently working on recasting his dissertation into a book.
