Jim Brown is associate professor of history at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1985 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1994 under the direction of Dr. David Good. The Family as Process: Family and Economy in Lower Austria, 1788-1848, the title of his dissertation, explored the development of peasant households in two parishes in Lower Austria between 1788 and 1848. Since then, his research has continued to focus on expanding the scope of familial changes to include spouses becoming widowed, children leaving home, and the life course of servants.
