ABOUT US

LAWA-Ghana is a non-profit company, incorporated on May 27, 1998 under the laws of the Republic of Ghana. It was incorporated by a group of female lawyers in Ghana, who participated in a program known as the Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) program, which was initiated by the Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program (WLPPFP) of Georgetown University Law Center (GULC), with sponsorship from the the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The LAWA program recruits, selects and trains women lawyers from Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda who are engaged in activities aimed at advancing women's human rights in their respective countries. Selected participants go to Washington D.C. in the U.S.A. for a sixteen month period of advanced legal legal study and work assignment on legal and policy issues affecting the status of women. They participate in a Master of Law degree (LL.M) program at GULC and a seminar program conducted by the WLPPFP. Following their studies, each participant is assigned to work as an intern with a legal or public interest organization in Washington D.C. where she works for six months on legal and policy issues affecting women.
