H-Grad is an electronic network for graduate students around the world, operating under the banner of the H-Net family of on-line discussion groups. The mission of the H-Grad e-mail list is to provide a discussion forum for the open and frank exchange of ideas on issues affecting graduate students, such as teaching, time management, research concerns, computer programs, choosing an advisor, and job-seeking. List subscriptions are limited to currently active graduate students, so that they may speak freely among themselves. The list is moderated to screen out junk mail, flames, and other undesirable materials. This web site is meant to support and enhance the services offered by the H-Grad e-mail list.
Our discussions can include any of the following topics: current research and research interests; methods and tools of analysis; preparing for papers and exams; choosing and getting along with mentors; gender issues in our research and in our departments; navigating departmental politics; reviews of primary and secondary sources; managing a loving relationship while in grad school; managing time and financial resources; and calls for papers, conferences, grants, fellowships, and job opportunities.
Every week H-Grad will post the H-Net list of job opportunities, an indexed file of positions which embraces a variety of fields.
H-Grad is also a forum for exploring the approaches, methods, and tools used in teaching undergraduate students. Syllabi, reading lists, and examinations are all valuable subjects for discussion. Undergraduates, faculty, and staff do not participate on, and are not allowed to join, this list.
The primary purpose of H-Grad is to encourage lively and professional discussion of the ins and outs of the graduate experience. Graduate school can be lonely, but conversation with graduate history scholars around the world will help to ease that sense of isolation.
The web site and e-mail list are currently maintained by seven graduate student co-editors -- Michael Bowen, Heather Kopelson, Madelyn Lovell, Catherine Maybrey, Lyra Totten-Naylor, Jessica Vernieri, and Michael Weisel. There is also an editorial board , which consists of a revolving membership that deals with problems relating to the operation of H-Grad.
