Research interests: I propose a history of reading in the German states after 1848. The two decades following the failed revolution of 1848-49 saw a generation of liberal writers and publishers harness an
expanding popular press to their project of civil education. My dissertation will examine how this effort to disseminate liberal sentiments in the middle-class German public actually fared with
readers. How were the literary ambitions of postrevolutionary liberals
accepted, challenged, or transformed by established practices of
reading? To what extent did this dialogue between intellectuals and
literate Germans mediate the drastic changes taking place in German
life between the revolution and national unification in 1871?
Structured as a series of case studies, treating both the aims of
important figures in the press and the reactions of individual
readers, my dissertation will reveal a crucial motor of bourgeois
cultural formation in the German states.
