Cohen Gerald Feldman's posting, with its citation from "Die Zeit" is a real service to the List. A personal note here. While serving with the 15th Air Force in Italy, rumors of massacres circulated. They came primarily from downed airmen, who had bailed out over Yugoslavia (or crash landed on Vis) and had been rescued and transported to Vis by Serb partisans. The perpetrators were said to have been "other Yugoslavs" - I suspect that Croats were the "other Yugoslavs." I regret to say that the entire matter seemed rather distant to us, and I don't recall much in the way of reaction. Today, with the advantage of hindsight, this seems scandalous. As to whether or not V-E Day was the defeat, liberation and/or the beginning of a time of suffering, it seems to me that the question is without merit. Contemplative silence and self-examination are called for, not a barbecue on the steps of the "Feldherrenhalle." Fritz G. Cohen .
