Kater might want to try Hermann Glaser's three volume _Kulturgeschichte der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland_.  Volume 1 covers the period from the end of
the Second World War until the currency reform; Vol. 2 goes from 1949 to
the end of the 1960s, and the third volume takes the story up through the
late 1980s.  Although Glaser does not belong to the "Zunft" his work has a
number of interesting ideas and offers very detailed coverage of a broad
swath of cultural life.
