Even 100 years later his Reden were widely reprinted - but to which extend they were actually read seems doubtable. Of larger influence then seems to me Ernst Moritz Arndt - through his poems as well as through his prose. [Odd aside: Arndt was cultivated in the DDR in its search for an own 'national' identity.] Of course, both Fichte and Arndt cannot be understood without first con- sidering Napoleon. W.F.
