My initial request was for those academics more conversant with the literature on German nationalism than I. I will be offering a honors seminar on the Holocaust sometime next year and intend to place this event in the historical context of 19th century German nationalism and the role of the modern state. I was thus looking for literature that 1) was topical and relevant, 2) suitable for an undergraduate audience, and 3) relatively easily available in pb. text form. Any suggestions would be appreciated. SRSilverburg Sanford R. In part I, Chapter 5 ("The Voelkisch Movement, Hitler, and the Beginnings of the NSDAP (1919-1923)"), Chapter 7 ("The Origin of Political Theology and the Jewish Question in German Protestantism (1917-1930)"), & in Part II, Chapter 3 ("The Jewish Question (March-April[1933])"). They are relatively short, but highly informative. Meier To: Sanford Silverburg Your seach for literature should move you in the direction of a variety of works including George L. Mosse's >>Germans & Jews<< (1971) and his >>The Crisis of German Ideology<< (1964). If you want something more generic to nationalism then perhaps Leonard Krieger's >>The German Idea of Freedom<< (1957). In reality, you are simply looking for works on 19th century German history -- then look for Hajo Holborn. However, I would be less that honest if I didn't say that your apparent methodology carries a powerful bias. If you want to understand the Holocaust within a historical perspective then use Yehuda Bauer's >>A History of the Holocaust<< (1982). It will give you the context you seek -- and your students should they use this work as a textbook. If you insist on moving closer to Europe, then look at Mosse's older >>19th and 20th Century European Cultural and Intellectual History<< (something along those lines). If you want something else for yourself on nationalism, then perhaps look back to Hans Kohn. A teaching model which promotes >>German<< 19th century nationalism as the unique carrier of the seeds of the Holocaust of the 1930s-1940s invites dangerously leading and simplistic conclusions. The Holocaust is a complex 20th century phenonmena and deserves to be largely treated as such. But, if you wish to expand the topic, then perhaps even Hannah Arendt's classic >>Totalitarianism<< which deals extensively with the role of anti-Semitism in European history. David A.
