I would very much agree with Shelly Baranowski's views on the weaknesses
of the Goldhagen argument and their reflection of the race versus class
discussions of the past decade or so. I would add, however, that although
antisemitism was not a defining characteristic of the Wilhelmine era, the
rise of the voelkisch movement and the triumph of the "conservative
revolution," which intensified during the last years of World War I, could
not have achieved its successes without playing the race and antisemitic
