Last night presidential candidate Bob Dole accused Hollywood of crossing the line of dignity and decency, promoting violence, and degrading women. Echoing the arguments advanced by Michael Medved a few years ago, he attacked the entertainment industry for undermining social values and slashing the nation's social fabric.
I wonder if there might be some way we can use Dole's comments to begin a thread on Hollywood and social values. I am not interested in how Hollywood has been a convenient political target, but rather how you, as teachers, deal with the movies' role as shapers (or reflectors) of particulars sets of values. Excuse me for not formulating this issue more precisely--still, I would be interested in your thoughts. Steve Mintz
