| field research in ethiopia
From April to June 1993, several teams of researchers led by a number of scholars from around the world, traveled to various parts of Ethiopia to first identify and then work with the artists who are featured in the exhibition. Each of the scholars returned to communities where they had worked before. In most cases the artists selected for the exhibition were chosen not by the research team, but by the people in the community in which they lived.
