Mississippi Oral History Program Index in hard copy and on line
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 1995 13:06:24 -0500
We are very happy to announce that we have re-edited and printed up a General Index to the Interview Collection of the Mississippi Oral History Program. And it's soon to be available to everybody free! The index summarizes the 700-odd deposited interviews and cross-references to subject lists. Most of the interviews fall within a listing of 31 project areas. The more complete or lengthier projects include
civil rights and race relations
Mississippi state government (all three branches)
regional and ethnic history
agriculture
early-twentieth-century life and work
World War II
prisoners of war (WWII, Korean and Vietnam)
Stennis Space Center and NASA in Mississippi
natural disasters, e.g., Hurricane Camille, 1927 flood
By snail mail, copies can be ordered for $15.75 with $4 shipping and handling for the first copy and $2 for additional copies.
The good news is that we're putting the index up on an ftp site (ftp.usm.edu) and you can download and print the whole thing for the cost of killing a few trees. Also the index will soon be available for searching via gopher (gopher.st.usm.edu) and the Web (http://www.usm.edu). We're hoping that the site will be ready in the fall.
Isn't somebody working on indexing standards for oral history? What stage is that in, anybody know? Does this mean I'll have to redo this whole project????
If you want more information about the index or about the collection's holdings, you can email me (address below) or Charles Bolton at cbolton@whale.st.usm.edu or you can call.
