Bibliography for theories of ethnicity (March 1995)
[Ruth Reichmann <REICHMAN@UCS.INDIANA.EDU>`writes:]
I very much like: Anya Peterson Royce, Ethnic Identity: Strategies of Diversity, Indiana University Press, Bloomington 1982. ISBN 0-253-31035-0

[Alina Oh <alinaoh@MIDWAY.UCHICAGO.EDU> writes to second Rodney Hall's mention of Smith's *Ethnic Revival,* and his suggestion of a bibliographic compilation:]
>>>[Rodney Bruce Hall <rhall@POGO.DEN.MMC.COM> wrote on March 9:]
I would say Anthony D. Smith's _The Ethnic Revival_, Cambridge, 1981 would be a must.

[Giuseppe Sciortino <sciorti@ITC.IT> continues building an H-Ethnic bibliography on theories of ethnicity with this very helpful contribution. JB]
In such a bibliography, I would not forgot - at least as far as sociology is concerned - the action theory tradition, recently revived in the so-called neofunctionalist school. Although not precisely trendy, they are important both as a point of reference for contemporary criticism and a food-for-thought about topic such as multiculturalism, symbolicy ethnicity, pluralism, ethnic identity.
Here are some of my favourites:
Alexander J. C., 1980, Core solidarity, ethnic outgroup and social
differentiation: a multidimensional model of inclusion in modern societies,
in J. Dofny e A. Akiwowo (eds.), National and ethnic movements, Sage,
London, 1980, pp.5-28.
Baum R. C., 1975, The System of Solidarities, "Indian Journal of Social
Research", vol. 16, n.1-2, pp. 306-353.
Eisenstadt S. N., 1985, Systemic Qualities and Boundaries of Societies:
Some Theoretical Considerations, in Alexander J.C. (ed.), Neofunctionalism,
Sage, Beverly Hills, pp. 99-112.
Gould M., 1992, The New Racism in United States Society, in P. Colomy
(eds.), 1992, The Dynamics of Social Systems, SAGE, Beverly Hills,
pp.154-173.
Lechner F.J., 1985, Modernity and its Discontents, in Alexander J.C. (a
cura di) Neofunctionalism, Sage, Beverly Hills.
Mayhew L., 1968a, Ascription in Modern Society, "SI", vol. 38, n.2, pp. 105-20.

Parsons (eds.), The Negro American, Houghton Mifflin, Boston, pp. 709-754.
Parsons T., 1968, The problem of Polarization on the Axis of Color, inJ. H.
Franklin (eds), Color and Race, Houghton Mifflin C., Boston, pp. 349-369.

of Change of Ethnicity, in N. Glazer, D. P. Moynihan (eds), Ethnicity:
Theory and Experience, Harvard University Press, Cambridge MA, pp. 53-83.
(some previously unpublished sections of this essays have been restored -
in English - in T. Parsons, 1994, Comunita societaria e pluralismo,
FrancoAngeli, Milan).
Prager J.,1987, American Political Culture and the Shifting Meaning of
Race, "Ethnic and Racial Studies", vol.10, n.1, pp. 62-81.
Sciortino G. (egoboost :-) ), 1994, La sociologia delle relazioni etniche
tra primordialismo ed etnicita', "La Ricerca Sociale", n. 47, PP. 58-98
Works E., 1967, The Pattern Variables as a Framework for the Study of
Negro-White Relations, "The Pacific Sociological Review", vol. 10, n. 1,
pp. 25-33.
I would also suggest to cover the rational choice approach to ethnic relations, a perspective that is producing a lot of innovative works in recent years.

I subscribe the suggestion to make such an interesting bibliography available in the net. Hoping the references are useful,
